I wanted to create a comic with just a few characters, and tons of awkward ‘human’ situations. Because they’re the funniest. OK, maybe not funniest but they do happen and are all part of the great wonderful fiasco of real life. And they’re great (like scifi) for getting to the core of what makes us, us. To be honest, that’s what really interests me; humans are ace.
So I’ve started with a ‘Charlie’ character, she’s a 19 year-old college student. Here are a bunch of test renders with a simple blue dress on. The dress is a free mesh which comes with the default Poser application – it doesn’t look anything like that to begin with, I had to clothify it and ‘grow’ the character in to stretch-fit it, so for the renders where she has different proportions I had to ‘regrow’ the dress.
This is a bit of a nightmare because if you use a mesh like that in a comic scene, when the character moves they tend to ‘poke through’ the inflexable mesh. Not ideal! So to get round this, I chose a base mesh which avoids the shoulders nicely – shoulders are always the worst parts for moving round and poking through. Same for when she walks – it’s a long dress so it’s like a bloody great solid tube down to the ground, when she walks her legs just stride through it! So in the comic … I mean I’ll just show her full-height shots when she’s standing still haha!

OK, so our initial scifi characters MUST include an alien, right?! I mean, it’s got to be done.
Damn, that pink top is working well. All I did was use the same blue dress charlie’s wearing, then literally delete 70% of the mesh! I kept chopping bits out, hence the accidental underboob…
Hair is some Kozaburo hair niceness, not sure it’s right but we’ll get there. The texture they used for Ix was by RMBianca (think it’s this one by Rebelmommy), and it’s still out there so I was able to build this humanoid – all I’ll do is alter maybe the nipples and the joints a bit, hair and outfits, but that’s a job for another day.
Spacesuit!!!!! Charlie needs a spacesuit, right? Here’s a few initial renders of some ideas for her, playing with hair ideas – I like short hair so I’m trying to find a cut that suits her. I think these versions are nice but the haircut she has in the blue dress is still winning at the mo 🙂
