A forgotten crush

^ Ignore the wig

I watched the 80s film Trading Places recently, and whilst wading through the horrific (mostly intentional, but still…) racism, sexism, bad one-liners, and … I wait is that … oh myyyy … Jamie Lee Curtis. I hear what you’re saying, and what I hear is … Jamie Lee Curtis.

My first female crush. Very awkward at the time for me to have a crush on a female. Double awkward to have completely forgotten about that and then realise she was totally my subconscious inspiration for Charlie in Lithium. The short hair and lithe body are 100% Jamie. AND SHE’S CALLED CHARLIE.

Charlie … Jamie … Charlie … Jamie …

So I was watching this film with a friend, gently giggling on the outside, but on the inside going OH MY FLIPPING WHAT THE HECK this is CHARLIE WHAAATTT?!?!?! And all those forbidden feels from the 80s or 90s came back to me. Little 10-14 year-old me had watched this film somehow (lax parenting, late night telly sneakiness probably), and I vaguely remember just absolutely getting the hots for Jamie and not quite knowing what to do about it. Well, I had some vague idea what I wanted to do about it …

First male crush for me is more obvious / less of a buried memory for some reason – probably because I didn’t feel ashamed about it at the time so I didn’t bury the memory I guess. I’m not going to share who it was I crushed on here though because now, as an adult, it’s a guilty secret. Because he’s a dick. Let’s say Saturday Morning TV presenter and just leave it there. I told you it was a guilty secret.

< Ah. Here she is without the ridiculous 80s wig. See what I mean? Yup. That’s … uh-huh. Yeah, that’s just Charlie except a bit older and with less baby fat on her face.

Tss, why is my awkward crush so lodged in my brain that I can pull a haircut out of a thirty year-old memory and it takes a year for me to realise who it was based on?!

Ah well. Out of respect for Jamie, I’m not going to post the nudey pictures here. But … damn, this is making me want to hurry up Lithium even more …
