The musics of the comicses, precious

While reading Oblomov’s updates to their extraordinary STFW wiki (serious props to Oblomov again), I happened across the Music section. For a few years I had wondered about making a sort of STFW playlist on Spotify, but the reason I didn’t, was I’d never remember what music references there had been – but hey presto! A readymade list!

Looking at Oblomov’s list made me wonder if there were other tracks in the STFW comics universe? (Hope you don’t mind this pondering, Oblomov, obviously your site is incredible and I for one really appreciate it!) … how about Georgia On My Mind by Billie Holiday, referenced in Grace. And Radar Detector by Darwin Deez in the same comic. And there’s two or three music tracks referenced at the end of the Skybloom comics. Also – at the end of STFW, there’s music references in the final scene, like Moonage Daydream (Bowie), and Magic Carpet Ride (Steppenwolf). But I’m not sure they count as they’re just blaring out of the radio rather than actual suggestions. Anyway, are there any others people can think of?

It’s obviously up to Oblomov what they add to their list, hey it’s their website, and it does seem Lithium-focussed, which makes sense. But the STFW comic universe is fairly large now, I wonder if there’s music references in Magnificent Bubble, for example? Can’t think of any off the top of my head.

Answers on a postcard.

Or postal vote papers.

While you still have the option.

  1. Through out all of the stories, there were a a few times Radar Love popped into my head. There were also a couple of times when you mentioned Bowie and it stayed in my head for the rest of the day.

I really like his site btw.

  2. Oh there’s a lot of references (musical and not) that I simply haven’t spotted, so I’m more than happy if people let me know so that I can add them!

  3. In Lithium 10 there’s an instruction to play Cannon in D Minor by Klaus Schultze during the main action sequence. Brought him into my life, for which I’m ever grateful. I work to his music.

    1. Aaagh. Already up there. It isn’t Klaus Schulze. So you put me onto the wrong musician (whom I like), Sindy. So that’s fine.

  4. I’ve updated the Music section in my “catalog” with the missing references, including the Skybloom ones that were only listed in the corresponding chapters’ descriptions. If anybody happens to find more missing references, please do comment here, I will check the comments form time to time and update the list.

    1. I don’t know if it counts if she just references a song, but in Kinfolk 2/02 he references the song “Hey-Nonny-Nonny”. 🙂
Skybloom 1/20 Michael BublĂ©: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
Skybloom 1/21 Dean Martin: Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
Skybloom 1/85 Little Richard: Long Tall Sally
Good reference: The Lithium 13/39 Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost: Hex Girls’ song: Those Meddlin’ Kids
The Lithium 9/102 Futurama S1E2 song: We’re whalers on the moon

And somewhere have a reference in Lithium to https://parappatherapper.fandom.com/wiki/Stage_5:_Hair_Scare#Lyrics, but I don’t remember where and when, sorry.

      1. Aw daaaaaamn SAJ Fan, some good references there! Didn’t even occur to me, any of them. And I wrote the comics, hahahaha!

Yeah good spot the Parappa The Rapper reference – it’s in Living Doll, when Jack is ‘shampooing’ the Polyp Elf hahaha. Another completely random idea that occurred to me as I was adding speech bubbles and I put in there for almost no reason whatsoever hahah
